A Pioneering Initiative for Climate, Gender and Social Justice
Since March 4, Catalan pharmacies have become allies of menstrual health, offering a wide range of reusable products free of charge: menstrual cups, absorbent panties and cloth pads. This pioneering initiative, promoted by the Department of Equality and Feminism and the Council of Pharmaceutical Colleges of Catalonia (CCFC), responds to a triple mission: climate justice, gender justice and social justice.
Combating the Climate Crisis
Every year, the disposable menstrual products industry generates a colossal amount of waste, about 750 million. The “My Rule, My Rules” campaign aims to mitigate this environmental impact by promoting the use of reusable products that significantly reduce the carbon footprint.
Breaking Taboos and Stigmas
Historically, menstruation has been a taboo subject, surrounded by myths and stereotypes that have stigmatized people who menstruate. This initiative seeks to challenge social norms, promoting open dialogue and the normalization of menstruation.
Fighting Menstrual Poverty
The cost of menstrual products can place a significant financial burden on many people. This campaign guarantees free access to these products, combating menstrual poverty and ensuring the dignity and well-being of all people who menstruate.
A Round Success: Pharmacies and Citizens Respond
The campaign “La Meva Regla, les Meves Regles” has been received with great enthusiasm by both pharmacies and citizens. In the first days, more than 200,000 QR codes were downloaded through the Meva Salut application, and more than 60,000 menstrual products were dispensed.
The Voice of Pharmacists
Alfred Verdaguer, head pharmacist at the Sant Julià de Vilatorta pharmacy, praises the campaign: “It is an absolute success.” He highlights that menstruation has historically been a taboo topic affecting half of the population, and that this initiative is a crucial step in breaking stigmas and promoting menstrual health.
The Importance of Pharmaceutical Advice
Pharmaceutical advice is essential so that people can choose the most appropriate reusable menstrual product for their needs and use it correctly. Pharmacists have received specific training to provide information and support, reinforcing their role as health and advice centres.
Custom Options: Menstrual Cup, Absorbent Socks or Cloth Pads
The “La Meva Regla, les Meves Regles” campaign offers a variety of options to suit individual preferences and needs. People can choose between menstrual cups, absorbent pads, or cloth pads.
Menstrual Cup: Durability and Efficiency
The menstrual cup is a durable and effective option that can last up to 10 years. It offers reliable and comfortable protection throughout the menstrual period.
Absorbent Socks: Comfort and Discretion
Absorbent pads are a comfortable and discreet alternative to disposable pads. They are designed to absorb menstrual flow and can be reused up to 100 times.
Cloth Pads: Tradition and Sustainability
Cloth pads are a traditional and sustainable option that has gained popularity in recent years. They are soft, reusable and environmentally friendly.
A Call to Citizens: Come to the Pharmacies!
Pharmacists encourage citizens to approach pharmacies to obtain information and advice on reusable menstrual products. “Do not hesitate to ask freely about any questions you have,” they say. This campaign is a unique opportunity to promote menstrual health, break taboos and move towards a more just and sustainable society.
