Recovering the legacy of women scientists
Tapputi Belatekallim, Wang Zhenyi, Henrietta Leavitt, Bertha Lutz or Cecilia Payne are some of the names of the 24 women who have made advances and discoveries throughout history in the various branches of science. However, their work has been made invisible due to gender. Now, through the “(In)visibles and (o)cults” exhibition, we want to recover the legacy of these 24 women from different eras and reference continents in the scientific world.
Fighting the cement ceiling
Women scientists have had to fight against a cement ceiling, as the member of the Casal de la Dona Mercè Fernández recalled. This exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which has been celebrated every February 11 since 2016, and to continue to fight against gender discrimination in this field.
The importance of visible references
The president of the Santfeliuenc University, Susana Artigas, claims the importance of having visible references in the scientific field for girls. It also highlights the need to work from the educational field to eliminate the wage gap and promote gender equality.
The Matilda effect and the invisibility of women scientists
The PhD in Contemporary History, Carme Sanmartí, highlights the Matilda effect, which refers to the suppression of the contribution of women in the development of research and the attribution of credit to male figures. This exhibition seeks to take action in the field of education and make women scientists from all over the world visible, without discrimination.
Details of the exhibition
The exhibition ‘Scientific women: (In)visible and (o)cult’ is made up of 24 panels that tell the stories of women scientists. It can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 5pm to 9pm, until March 12 in the Culture Room of Ateneo Santfeliuenc. This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona (MCNB), the Sant Feliu de Llobregat Women’s Home and the Santfeliuenc University, and is part of the activities of the International Day of woman
