The memory of the Holocaust
The Parliament of Catalonia has carried out an emotional act to remember the victims of the Holocaust. This ceremony commemorates the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945. This date has been designated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The importance of remembering
The President of the Parliament, Anna Erra, has highlighted the importance of remembering to prevent history from repeating itself. He stressed that education is essential to prevent intolerance and indoctrination in society. In this sense, he has asked that lessons be drawn from history and that attempts to destroy social cohesion and the fundamental principles of society be confronted.
Representatives of victim groups
In this event, representatives of the collectives of victims of Nazism have lit the six candles of remembrance. These groups include the Jewish people, those persecuted for political reasons, the Roma people, people with disabilities, the LGBTI group and the sons and daughters of those who passed the Freedom Routes.
Student participation
Students from six institutes that have participated in an educational project of the Parliament also played a prominent role in this event. They emphasized the importance of knowing history and not allowing the mistakes of the past to be repeated. They have expressed their commitment to fight against darkness and preserve peace.
The emotional act
During the event, a dramatized reading of texts by Mercè Núñez was performed and musical pieces were performed. This ceremony was attended by various authorities and representatives of different institutions.
