A Tribute to the Figure of Mayor Antoni Farrés
The promenade that has emerged from the burying of the FGC tracks between Gràcia and Can Feu has been named after the mayor Antoni Farrés, in a decision approved by the Board of Spokespersons this Wednesday. This initiative, promoted by ERC and with the support of PSC, Crida, Junts, Sabadell En Comú Podem, represents a tribute to a charismatic and respected figure of the contemporary era.
Recognition of Democratic and Workers’ Values
Antoni Farrés is remembered as a leader with unequivocally democratic, workerist and Catalanist values, who led the city from 1979 to 1999. The motion that prompted this decision highlights his political and institutional practice, characterized by commitment to the public interest, the standard of honesty and the ability to reach agreements and build consensus far beyond acronyms.
Origins of the Proposal
The proposal to name the promenade after the mayor Antoni Farrés arose from an old claim by the Association of Residents of Gràcia, which proposed this name two months after his death on February 13, 2009. 25 years ago now. The undergrounding of the tracks was completed ten years ago, and the development of this space left by the tracks is currently pending tender.
Other Recognitions in the Sabadell Society
The same motion also recalls other additions and changes in the nomenclature approved by the City Council, such as a space dedicated to Muriel Casals and another to Pere Casaldàliga, as well as the elimination of characters typical of military dictatorships and the slavery of the public space, and the construction of monuments dedicated to Francesc Layret and Carlos Gardel.
