The Spanish Equality Minister, Ana Redondo, defends the abortion law
The Spanish Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, has stated that at this moment the important thing is to develop the law and be demanding with the communities so that they collaborate and guide us along the now open path. He has closed the door to the possibility of making a constitutional reform to guarantee the right to abortion, arguing that the Spanish state does not have the necessary consensus to take this step.
Constitutional Reform and Fundamental Rights
According to Redondo, the reform of the central elements of the Spanish constitution requires an aggravated procedure endorsed by imposing majorities and a referendum. In his opinion, the current situation, with the influence of Vox in the Spanish Congress and on the PP, does not make it possible to reach an agreement.
Protests and Mobilizations of 8-M
The minister has called on the entire population to fill the streets and squares to claim equality, emphasizing that Spain is a feminist country recognized around the world as one of the countries that has made the most progress in terms of equality.
Work for Equality
Redondo has highlighted the importance of continuing to work to guarantee the progress of recent years, especially with regard to the perception of young people affected by a “wave of denial”. He insisted on the need for 8-M to be every day of the year.
Extraordinary Council of Ministers
The minister has advanced that next Friday’s extraordinary council of ministers will be focused for the first time on equality measures, and will include relevant measures.
