Unemployment in Andorra remains low despite the pandemic

1.2% of the active population is unemployed, according to data from the Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics published this Monday the unemployment figures in Andorra, which show a stable situation compared to the previous quarter and better than a year ago. Out of an estimated population of 62,312 people aged between 15 and 64, 608 were unemployed on December 31 of last year, which represents 1.2%. This percentage has dropped by 0.5% compared to the end of 2022.

Differences by gender and age

The unemployment rate is not the same for all segments of the population. There are more men (1.4%, with 401 unemployed) than women (0.8%, 207) out of work. In addition, women have improved their situation both in the last quarter (-0.2) and in the last year (-1.3).

In terms of age groups, the most affected by unemployment are young people. 3.8% of people between the ages of 15 and 24 are in this condition, although the figure has decreased slightly in recent months (-0.2 since the third quarter and -0.9 since the end of 2022) . Conversely, the population between 25 and 54 has an average unemployment rate (1.1%) and the oldest – between 55 and 64 – are even lower (0.8%).

Comparison with other countries

Andorra has a much lower unemployment rate than neighboring countries, probably due to the effect of losing health coverage after three months of being out of work, which means that many people, if not get another job, end up leaving. In any case, the average in the European Union is 5.9% while in Spain it ended in 2023 with 11.8%. As for the French figure, it stood at 7.4%.

Rate of employed population

The Department of Statistics has also published the employed population rate, which measures people of working age who are, in fact, doing so. This rate is 83.3%, which represents an increase of six tenths compared to the end of 2022. By gender, among men it is 84.9% while among women, 81.6%. On the other hand, it drops a lot in the case of young people (28.5%, almost five points less than last year.
