A Summer Marked by Tragedy

With the arrival of summer, the statistics on gender-based violence take an alarming turn. The holidays, which should be a time of celebration, become a period where assaults and violations are rampant, affecting not only the direct victims, but the entire society. The recent sentence in a ‘gang’ rape case in Mallorca has once again highlighted the slowness of justice, which is unbearable for the affected families.

The Data That Speaks

The figures are devastating: twenty-nine women murdered in Spain in the course of one summer. Each of these losses represents a broken life and a devastated family. Children who are left without mothers and fathers who mourn the loss of their daughters remind us of the gravity of this situation.

Patriarchy in Action

Male violence does not discriminate against ages or social classes; it is a phenomenon that affects women from all walks of life. Recently, Fabiola Yañez, the former first lady of Argentina, made public her complaint against her husband for male violence, an example that illustrates that this problem crosses all spheres of society, including those who hold positions of power

A Growing Social Response

Despite the brutality of these attacks, there is an increase in social awareness. More and more people are reacting to situations of abuse, stopping aggressors in the street and alerting the authorities. This new attitude represents a change in the collective mentality, a step towards building a fairer and more equal society.

Denial and Resistance

However, not everything is encouraging. There are voices that deny the magnitude of the problem, with comments that perpetuate the idea that women are responsible for the violence they suffer. These statements only reinforce the need for deeper education about gender respect and equality.

Education as the Key to Change

It is essential to foster respect from childhood. The responsibility does not lie only with the education system, but society as a whole must contribute to form individuals who respect and value the dignity of people. Daily coexistence influences the future attitudes of young people more than one might think.

A Future Without Violence

The summer, with its contradictions and tensions, highlights the urgent need to transform our society. Male violence is a manifestation of patriarchy that must be eradicated. Society must respond with more resources for prevention, attention to victims and the training of professionals who work in this area.

We cannot allow toxic relationships to continue. We need a system that offers real support and solutions for victims, as well as justice that acts quickly and effectively. It’s time to say ‘not one more’, and to work for a world where women, young people and girls can live free, respected and without fear.
