A necessary dialogue about water
In our daily lives, we have all experienced times when our actions are misinterpreted or accused without foundation. Recently, the Alcoi Government, led by Toni Francés, has found itself in a similar situation regarding the water management of the city.
The water crisis: key questions
During the plenary session in March, the Popular Party group raised fundamental questions about the state of the Molinar’s water catchment, especially after a period of drought. Information was also requested on the quality of the water used to clean the streets and better management of water resources was suggested, with an emphasis on the use of purified water for non-potable purposes, as well as the revitalization of green spaces of the city.
The objective of the proposal
The intention of these questions was none other than to inform the population about the water situation in Molinar and to propose improvements that benefit both water resources and the urban landscape. It was not about generating alarmism, but about promoting a constructive debate about the sustainability of our environment.
A historical legacy that challenges us
It is crucial to approach the question of water without political prejudices, as was done in the first years of democracy. We remember that in 1982, an article in Ciudad de Alcoy highlighted the worrying drop in the water level of the Molinar well, with a drop of 6.5 meters, according to the water councilor at the time, Lluís Torró. That situation led to a consensus between the political forces to open a new well and create a Water Protection Community.
The interconnection of ecosystems
Molinar’s water management is not limited to drinking water for Alcoi, but also affects the Serpis river basin. Wasting the water from this well not only reduces the flow of the river, but can compromise the entire fluvial ecosystem of the Serpis regions, with consequences that go beyond our municipal borders.
Environmental education: a priority
The educational initiatives promoted by the Department of the Environment seek to raise public awareness of the importance of saving water. Water is a scarce commodity and, despite the fact that the Molinar wells have not been seriously affected by the current drought, it is essential to manage its consumption responsibly. Unlike other resources, the lack of water is obvious and hard to hide, and the solutions are complex.
Looking to the future
Faced with the challenges presented by water management, it is imperative that we as a society adopt a proactive stance. The sustainability of our water resources is not only a government responsibility, but a collective commitment that affects us all. Reflecting on our relationship with water is the first step to ensure a more sustainable future for Alcoi and its future generations.
