A solstice marked by the anticyclone
The arrival of winter in Spain, which coincides with the solstice on December 21, is presented with remarkable atmospheric stability, thanks to an anticyclone that will dominate much of the territory during the Christmas holidays.
Diverse climate in the Canary Islands
However, the Canary Islands will experience a different climate, as a DANA (Isolated High Level Depression) will affect their atmosphere during the weekend, but is expected to disappear by Monday.
Rain and temperature expectations
According to meteorologist Mario Picazo, the anticyclone will provide clear skies and stable conditions, with the possibility of morning fog in some interior valleys. Temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual, leaving behind the intense frosts of recent days.
Precipitation forecasts
Despite the anticyclone, some regions of the northern peninsula could experience isolated rain due to humid winds coming from the north. In addition, in the Mediterranean area, especially around the Balearic Islands, there could be occasional showers.
Snowy mountains
Although the anticyclone marks the winter panorama, the northern mountains, including the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains, could receive some light snowfall during the Christmas weekend, with the possibility of snow remaining in some high mountain areas until Christmas Day.
Temperatures rising during Christmas week
Picazo also highlights that, although the atmosphere will continue to be cool, minimum temperatures will show an increase compared to previous days. Cities such as Teruel and Soria will experience light frosts, while others such as Malaga or Ceuta could register temperatures exceeding ten degrees.
A warmer Christmas
Overall, the weather these days is noticeably warmer than usually expected, thus offering an ideal opportunity for those who wish to enjoy outdoor activities during Christmas.
