The recovery of bone remains
The General Directorate of Democratic Memory of the Department of Justice has recovered the skeletal remains of fifty-seven people in the excavation of the hermitage pit of Remei de Flix (Ribera d’Ebre). This recovery represents an important step in the preservation of historical memory and the dignification of past events.
The historical importance of the pit
This pit, associated with a republican field hospital, is the largest exhumed in 2023 in the Principality. The evidence of amputations, medical treatments of the exhumed and the medical material deposited next to the bodies, suggest the relationship with a hospital center during that turbulent period.
The scientific value of exhumations
The general director of the Generalitat’s Democratic Memory, Alfons Aragoneses, has emphasized that these exhumations not only allow for the dignified reburial of the bodies, but also contribute to scientific knowledge about this historical period. Ongoing anthropological and genetic studies seek to identify the remains and facilitate their return to the families.
Serendipitous discovery and research
The Flix pit was discovered by chance in March 2013, when children were playing near the site. From that moment on, an exhaustive investigation began that culminated in this important recovery and progress in the preservation of historical memory.
