New project for pedestrian safety

The City Council of Tarragona has launched an ambitious initiative that includes the installation of 44 speed reducers in various strategic points of the city. The Minister of Mobility, Sonia Orts, emphasized that this project responds to the need to improve road safety and to pacify urban traffic.

Collaboration with local communities

Orts emphasized the importance of citizen participation, mentioning that the proposals of the neighborhood associations were taken into account. “They know the needs of their neighborhoods very well and this helps us identify the most critical points,” he said.

Significant improvements to the contract

In addition, the initial contract has been expanded with eight additional locations, which demonstrates the City Council’s commitment to the safety of its citizens. The work, which is expected to start soon, will last approximately four weeks and a budget of € 99,602.64 with VAT included.

Data on urban accidents

Statistics show that three out of four accidents with victims in Catalonia occur in urban areas, with 20% of those involved in pedestrians. Excessive speed is one of the most determining factors in these incidents, which makes the installation of reducers a fundamental measure.

Type of reducers to install

The installed reducers include backs of donkey and Berlin pillows. The donkeys are designed to cause effective reduction in streets with limits of 30 km/h, while Berlin pillows allow more fluid circulation for public transport vehicles and bicycles, limiting the impact only to cars.

Key locations for installation

The reducers will be placed in various parts of the city, including streets near schools and areas with high traffic density. These sites have been meticulously selected to ensure the maximum safety of pedestrians and drivers.

A look at Futur

With this new initiative, Tarragona not only seeks to reduce the speed of vehicles, but also to foster a culture of respect and security in public roads. The ultimate goal is to create a more secure and accessible environment for everyone, especially for those who walk through the city streets.
