Tortosa’s economic management: an unknown reality

by PREMIUM.CAT

The truth behind the surplus

In the last 21 months, Mr. Jordan has tried to believe that his speeches were unquestionable truths, but reality has imposed. This week, the 2024 budget liquidation decree has revealed that the City of Tortosa closed the year with a record surplus of 6,117,756.47 euros, a result that contrasts with the claims of increasing taxes.

Unnecessary taxes and scarce investments

From Together for Tortosa, we have argued that the tax hike proposed by the local government was completely unjustified. With increases of 18% in the IBI, 19% in the IAE and 28% in the garbage rate, the City Council intended to raise € 2.8 million. However, the figures show that they have accumulated more than double this amount without an effective investment plan for the city.

The paradox of the surplus

A surplus can be two options: obtain extraordinary grants or not to properly execute the budget. The current government has chosen to leave Tortosa stop, increasing fiscal pressure without investing in community improvements. The figure is alarming: only 10.1% of the investments they promised have been executed.

A politics strategy that is not very transparent

Tax hike does not respond to real needs, but is an ideological decision of the tripartite. While the tortosins pay more, they receive less services. Resource management seems to be focused on satisfying particular interests than to advance the city.

Mr Jordan’s fear campaign

Since arriving at the mayor’s office, Mr. Jordan has chosen to be signed together for Tortosa, instead of working for the community. His statement that the City Council was ruined was contradicted with its high salary of almost 60,000 euros, and now, with a total remnant of 27.1 million euros, it is clear that there are resources, but not to improve Tortosa.

Government’s reaction to the truth

Despite knowing the financial situation since February 26, the Government has not communicated the truth to the citizenry. Together for Tortosa, it was the information on March 17, while the government reacted with excuses and contradictions in an improvised statement. The truth is clear: taxes have been increased to accumulate money without any action plan.

Towards a better future for Tortosa

From Together for Tortosa, we firmly believe that economic resources must be in the hands of the Tortosins, not in the current accounts without use. Our proposal is to reverse the tax hike, because Tortosa needs transparency, responsibility and a real commitment to progress.

A call to action

As we go into the future, it is essential that the city recover the dynamism it has lost. Citizens deserve a government that prioritizes their needs over political strategies. The current situation demands us to act and work collectively for a better Tortosa.
