A group of about 30 individuals linked to the extreme right burst into the social club La Cosa Nostra with bats and iron bars and assault the attendees of a party
A 32-year-old man is in the ICU of the Hospital General de Castelló after being beaten by a group of ultra-rightists who stormed the La Cosa Nostra anti-fascist camp on Saturday night. According to the Mediterráneo newspaper, the attackers, who were carrying bats and iron bars, had as their target the party that was being held in the social premises on the occasion of the Magdalena festivities, on Carrer Sant Miquel in the Valencian city.
The Spanish police have opened an investigation to clarify the facts and identify those responsible, but at the moment no one has been arrested. Several local media point out that the attack has an ideological motivation, since the assailants intended to reach the headquarters of the La Cosa Nostra Antifa Social Club gang, a meeting place and anti-fascist protest. Witnesses say the far-right group arrived around 11:30 p.m. and began beating attendees, including families and children.
Cosa Nostra accuses Vox councilor Antonio Ortolá of instigating the incidents
La Cosa Nostra issued a statement holding Vox councilor Antonio Ortolá responsible for the incidents. In the text, they affirm: “They will not be able to do anything against a united, joyful and combative people. We are very clear that to resist is to win. Thank you and much love to those who risk their freedom, and even their bodies, for not giving in and confronting to the reaction that tried with all its repressive forces and its pins to stop a critical, supportive and anti-fascist Castelló, something they will never achieve.”
This is not the first time that Vox councilor Antonio Ortolá and his followers have harassed and threatened members of La Cosa Nostra. The actor Guillermo Toledo reported on X (former Twitter) that the “fascist” Ortolá and his “uniformed orcs” had been “harassing the comps of @LaCosaNostraCS” for months until “he got it: 30 Nazis entered on Saturday local assaulting them with bats. A comrade is in the ICU. Anti-fascist solidarity✊🏼”.
Support and solidarity with the assaulted and the popular camp
Different entities and parties have expressed their support for the victims and the popular camp. Compromís has published a message to X condemning the aggression and pointing out that Vox had marked the camp as a target. From the political formation they are clear: “Neo-Nazis (nothing happens to say it) leave a young man in the ICU in Castellón.”
From Alerta Solidària they have also shown their solidarity with La Cosa Nostra and have stated that “we know we are free when we see that we disturb them and that this fills them with rage. They have no other argument than reaction and violence. We have the people, reason and time! We will win!”
Lack of official information and attitude of the police
Despite the inquiries made, there is still no official information about the events or the condition of the injured. The witnesses who witnessed the attack told the Mediterráneo newspaper that when they saw the armed group pass by, they called 112, “it was clear that they were up to no good,” they say. One of those attending the party told Catalunya Ràdio that already in the morning they had problems with the local police, who put obstacles in their way to set up the bars that would be used at night. The man remembers that since PP and Vox have been in power they have always encountered obstacles and difficulties to limit their activities on the street.
“At night, we were partying, in a family atmosphere, and a group of about 30 fascists arrived with sticks and iron bars and started assaulting us. It could have been much worse, but that doesn’t make it any less worrying because there is a person in the ICU”, explains this person who also complains that when the fascists left the police arrived and facilitated and allowed the fascists to leave without identifying any of them. “In fact, the police made it difficult for the health services to arrive,” he added.
