Juan Carlos Caballero rejects Vox’s proposal

The spokesman for the PP group in the Valencia City Council, Juan Carlos Caballero, has announced that he will not support Vox’s proposal to remove the promenade dedicated to Guillem Agulló in the gardens of Vivers de Valencia, as he had announced this morning far right

The decision of Juanma Badenas

The Councilor for Parks and Gardens of Valencia and spokesperson for Vox, Juanma Badenas, has announced a few hours ago that the council will remove the promenade dedicated to Agulló in the Jardins de Vivers. According to the leader of the extreme right, the tribute to the young anti-fascist killed in 1993 is “an imposition on part of the Valencians” who, after the elections of May 28, “are the minority”. “It is appropriate to name this walk with a name that matches what most Valencians think and feel”, he added.

Reactions to the withdrawal of the award

Guillem Agulló’s father has expressed his relief at the withdrawal of the award bearing his son’s name at Les Corts. He has affirmed that Guillem’s memory will not be erased.

History of the tribute to Guillem Agulló

The presence of Guillem Agulló in the nomenclature of Valencia was a historical vindication and, in 2018, the government of Joan Ribó dedicated the promenade to him when it was twenty-five years since the assassination. After twenty-four hours the plaque was ripped off, and municipal officials had to put it back up. Last year, during a tribute to Agulló in Benimaclet, someone threw toxic liquid from a window at the participants, who reported the incident to the police. In addition, the Valencian Courts have removed Guillem’s name from the coexistence awards that, since 2017, have been given every April 25.

Political reactions

After Badenas’ announcement and before Caballero’s, the councilor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, lamented in a tweet that “they are persecuting the memory of a young Valencian victim of hatred who was killed by neo-Nazis just for thinking different”. He added: “This is the level of the municipal government, this is the democratic level of the government of María José Catalá”.
