Initiative of Together for Animal Dignity
The parliamentary group Together has presented an innovative proposal to ensure the welfare of the dogs that make up the Canine Unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra. The purpose of this initiative is to recognize these animals as official police officers, guaranteeing a decent and full life until the end of their days.
Commitment to the welfare of the dogs
Deputy Jeannine Abella emphasized the need to make legislative changes that allow the canine unit dogs to be owned by the Department of the Interior until his death. This would mean that the expenses of veterinary living and assistance were covered by the administration, thus guaranteeing the physical, emotional and psychological well -being of animals.
Maintenance of relationship with agents
According to the proposal, once the dogs retire, they should not be transferred to third parties, but the agents who worked with them could continue to have custody. The Canine Unit of the Mossos, which currently has about 65 dogs of different races, has noted that when animals retire between the ages of 9 and 11, they are usually given in adoption, ceasing to be part of the body. However, recently, the Rural Agents Corps has established a precedent for recognizing the dogs of the special canine group as agents, ensuring their protection and well-being throughout their lives.

Deputy Abella said that this pioneering initiative could serve as a model for other emergency canine units, promoting greater protection and recognition of working dogs. He also recalled that the parliamentary group had already recorded several questions about the well -being of these animals, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a better future for dogs that serve society.
