Labor inequalities: poverty that affects Catalan families

by PREMIUM.CAT

The hidden reality behind the work

A recent report by Save the Children reveals that an alarming 16.5 % of families with children in Catalonia, despite having a job, are in a poverty situation. These data show that employment does not always ensure the minimum needed to live dignifiedly.

Impact of the presence of children on poverty

The study indicates that 11.1 % of workers in Catalonia live in poverty, a figure that firmers in the presence of children at home. In couples without children, the percentage is 6.6 %, but rises to 10.1 % with a child, 11.3 % with two, and reaches 41 % in large families with three or more children. Single -parent families also have a significant impact, with 34.8 % at risk of poverty.

Economic Difficulties: A combination of factors

Among the outstanding causes are the salary insufficiency and the low labor intensity. Many workers do not enjoy full -time contracts and often occupy precarious working conditions. Thus, even if they are formally employed, their income does not arrive to meet the basic needs.

Vulnerable sectors and their influence

The report also emphasizes that workers in the sectors of the manufacturing industry, agriculture, hospitality and household work are the most suffering from this situation, exposing itself to a greater risk of poverty.

The cost of motherhood

The data highlights the labor discrimination that many women suffer from motherhood. A high percentage of them reduces their hours of work or even abandon their occupation to take care of their children, which has a negative effect on their income. In fact, 89 % of leave of absence in Catalonia are submitted by women.

Inequalities in poverty: the migrant perspective

The situation is complicated for families with migrant origins, as the poverty rate between them is 44.7 %, 35 %higher than those of Spanish nationality families, which stands at 9 %.

Proposals to combat child poverty

Save the Children urges to implement various measures to deal with this problem, including the launch of the child poverty strategy designed by the Government, to improve social benefits and promote family conciliation, with a special approach to the extension of the offer and the gratuitousness of kindergartens throughout Catalonia.
