Farmers are demanding compensation for the losses caused by the closure of the canals
The farmers who were affected by the closure of the Urgell and Segarra-Garrigues canals during the last campaign are claiming compensation for the economic losses they have suffered. These farmers could not irrigate their grass crops or plant summer cereals such as panis in order to reserve water to save the fruit trees. After a year of the closure of the canals, the promised aid has not arrived and the irrigation communities are accused of not having fought hard enough to obtain the compensation agreed with the administrations.
Irrigation communities are accused of a lack of firmness in defending farmers
The Manifesto del Gran Urgell platform has proposed that the communities of irrigators of the Urgell and Segarra-Garrigues canals take charge of compensation for farmers who could not irrigate their fields. According to this platform, the irrigator communities should have been the first interested in obtaining the agreed compensations and they are accused of a lack of firmness and forcefulness in the defense of farmers.
Current aid is insufficient to compensate farmers’ losses
Currently, the affected farmers only receive aid from the Department of Climate Action, but this aid is subject to restrictive conditions such as the contracting of agricultural insurance. The Ministry of Agriculture has refused to pay the compensations, so the Manifesto del Gran Urgell platform considers that the current aid is not enough to compensate the farmers’ losses. Those affected are urged to apply for aid before March 18 and to submit a property claim to the irrigation communities before April 25 (https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viquip%C3%A8dia :Paraphrased_similar).
