Environmental and social groups call for a protest

Various environmental and social groups have organized a demonstration to demand the stoppage of the works on the hotel located on La Tejita beach, in the municipality of Granadilla, Tenerife. The rally will take place next Friday, March 15, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Five-day period to comply with the law

The organizers of the demonstration give a period of five days to the administrations involved, such as Costas, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Granadilla City Council, to comply with the law and stop the construction of the hotel. They argue that the development company has used up to five judicial rulings from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands to resume work.

Serious violations and destruction of the ecosystem

According to the Tenerife Association of Friends of Nature (ATAN), the company has been carrying out excavation and clearing work in the public maritime land domain since February 26, which constitutes a very serious infraction according to the Coastal Law. In addition, they accuse the company of having the intention of destroying the dune corridor in a premeditated manner. Environmentalists point out that the rest of the work is paralyzed and without the presence of workers, which demonstrates the intention of the developer to destroy the land with a sandy ecosystem.

Incompatibility with the current boundary

ATAN highlights that the current demarcation, approved in 2021, affects 30% of the hotel project, which makes the construction of hotel beds within that area incompatible. According to the group, the urban reality has changed and a review of the municipal license and the title enabling works under protection easement granted by the Government of the Canary Islands in 2016 is required. In addition, they point out that the current authorization fails to comply with several conditions, such as lack of a report on wastewater management.

Environmental impact and climate change

ATAN also highlights that the hotel project does not align with the climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy approved by the Parliament of the Canary Islands. Dune ecosystems are essential for protecting the coast against rising sea levels. In addition, they denounce that the wastewater from the project is dumped into the sea without treatment.

Call to the authorities

Given this situation, environmentalists wonder why the competent authorities allow the construction of the hotel to continue. They call on Costas, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Granadilla City Council to review the licenses and paralyze the project.
