Esquerra regains the presidency of the Generalitat
The Parliament of Catalonia has invested Pere Aragonès as the 132nd president of the Generalitat. This investiture has been possible thanks to the favorable votes of ERC, JxCat and the CUP (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/). With this investiture, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya regains the presidency of the Generalitat after 80 years.
A president with broad parliamentary support
Pere Aragonès has been invested as president of the Generalitat with the support of the 74 pro-independence deputies, specifically 33 from ERC, 32 from JxCat and 9 from CUP. This is the third investiture of Pere Aragonès, after two failed attempts in March (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/). With these 74 votes in favor, Aragonès has managed to equal the record of Pasqual Maragall, who in 2003 also obtained 74 votes in favor in his investiture.
The investiture ceremony
The vote for the investiture of Pere Aragonès was carried out by roll call, with each deputy pronouncing his vote out loud. After the announcement of the results by the president of the Parliament, Laura Borràs, the deputies of ERC, Junts per Catalunya and the CUP applauded the election of Aragonès. Then, Aragonès greeted the leaders of the other parties present in the chamber.
The seventh president of the Generalitat since the recovery of democracy
Pere Aragonès is the seventh president of the Generalitat since the recovery of democracy. The previous presidents have been Jordi Pujol, Pasqual Maragall, José Montilla, Artur Mas, Carles Puigdemont and Quim Torra. Most of these presidents were elected in the first round, with the exception of four occasions when a second round was required (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/) .
Taking possession and appointment
The president of the Parliament, Laura Borràs, will contact King Felipe VI to inform him of the vote in favor of Aragonès’ investiture. According to the Law of the Presidency, the taking of possession must take place within 5 days from the publication of the appointment. Pere Aragonès is expected to take office on Monday, and subsequently the councilors of his government will also take office (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
