Companies Illa and Servial in charge of construction and management

The plenary session of Vic City Council has approved the concession to the companies Instalaciones de Lleure Esportiu Illa SA and Servial Obres i Serveis for the construction and management of the Can Garrofa sports complex. These companies will be responsible for the construction and management of this sports equipment for the next 35 years.

Costs and usage fee debate

The total cost of the sports complex will be seven million euros, of which 4.8 million will be used for construction. During the plenary session, a debate was generated about user fees, with the councilor for urban planning, Xavier Solà, defending the prices compared to other sports facilities. This has caused a confrontation with the councilor of ICV-EUiA, Xavier Tornafoch, who has questioned the fairness of the proposed prices.

Reactions of the opposition and approval of the concession

The opposition, represented by Josep Anglada of the PxC and Xavier Tornafoch of ICV-EUiA, has expressed concern regarding the magnitude of the complex and the proposed usage fees. Despite this, the concession to the companies Illa and Servial has been approved with the support of the governing team of CiU, PSC and ERC, as well as the CUP, while PxC and ICV-EUiA have abstained.

Details of the new sports complex

The new Can Garrofa sports complex will have several first-class facilities, including two indoor swimming pools, a water and relaxation area, spaces for fitness and gymnastics activities, a service area with a cafeteria, a track outdoor multipurpose area with three 3-a-side football pitches, a solarium and four padel courts. It is expected that the works will start in about nine months and be finished in September 2010.

Debate on positions of trust

In addition to the concession of the sports complex, the plenum has also approved the hiring of a director for the Municipal Institute of Economic Promotion (ImpeVic) and a director of the social welfare area. This decision has generated criticism from the opposition, which has questioned the need for these positions of trust in the current context.
