Xavier Trias does not rule out a pact with the PSC after the Catalan elections
The former mayor of Barcelona and leader of Junts at the City Council, Xavier Trias, has stated that he does not rule out a pact with the PSC after the Catalan elections on May 12. In an interview with Europa Press, Trias has stated that he must always be open to this possibility and that the problem lies in what would be done in the event of an agreement. According to Trias, a possible agreement with the socialists must start from the premise that Junts is pro-independence and from the need to find mechanisms for the independence of Catalonia. Trias has emphasized that independence is an aspiration, but that the ultimate goal is for Catalonia to be less dependent on the Spanish State. In this sense, he pointed out the importance of negotiating a new financing system that has the consensus of the PSOE and the PP, as is already happening in the Basque Country.
Trias defends that Puigdemont presides over Junts
Xavier Trias has expressed his support for Carles Puigdemont as president of Junts. Trias has affirmed that Puigdemont should preside over the party because he is a person capable of leading and unifying different positions. Despite not being the one to make the decision, Trias emphasized that Puigdemont must be the one in charge and that it must be clear that he is the one leading the party.
Martí is considered the successor of Trias in the City Council
In relation to his departure from the City Council, Xavier Trias has announced that Jordi Martí, current spokesperson of the municipal group, will be his successor as president of the municipal group. Trias has given less than a year to decide on a future candidate among the councilors of the group, emphasizing the importance of choosing someone with a vocation to stay. Trias has stated that they cannot wait to decide when there is little time left for the next elections and that the municipal group is already well organized.
