Luis Rubiales, investigated for alleged crimes of corruption
Luis Rubiales, former president of the RFEF, has returned to Spain ahead of his return from the Dominican Republic. Upon his arrival at Barajas airport, he was detained by the Central Operative Unit (UCO) to be investigated for alleged crimes of corruption, money laundering and disloyal administration.
Arrest and transfer to the command of the Civil Guard
Rubiales has been transferred to the command of the Civil Guard in Tres Cantos, where he can be held for up to 72 hours. The authorities have avoided public exposure of Rubiales, as police officers put him in a van immediately after he got off the plane and left the airport for a private exit (https://www.softcatala. org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
Research and media expectation
The UCO had already searched Rubiales’ accommodation in the Dominican Republic, where he was on vacation. During the search, police officers confiscated a mobile phone and a tablet belonging to the former president. The arrival of Rubiales in Spain has generated great media anticipation, with a hundred journalists waiting for him at Barajas airport (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/) .
Reasons for early return
Rubiales was initially scheduled to return to Spain next Saturday, but has decided to bring his return forward. According to sources in his defense, the reason for this change of plans has been his desire to return as soon as possible after the Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant against him in the case of the alleged irregular contracts of the RFEF (https:/ /www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
Ongoing investigation
The judge is investigating several contracts related to the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia and other businesses. In addition, Rubiales also faces a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for a non-consensual kiss on player Jennifer Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup final.
