A new approach to Vatican diplomacy
Diplomacy involves the management of international relations and negotiation between countries and state actors. In the case of Vatican diplomacy, under the leadership of Pope Francis, it stands out for its approach open to dialogue and committed to peace.
Pope Francis has reiterated the importance of multilateral diplomacy in his speeches and actions, promoting cooperation and dialogue between multiple countries or international actors to address global or regional challenges.
Building relationships in a globalized world
In an increasingly globalized world, Pope Francis has issued several speeches that highlight the need for greater fraternity and solidarity between nations. He emphasized that despite the proximity that globalization can provide, we still suffer from a lack of fraternity that results in situations of injustice, poverty and inequality.
The Pope has expressed concern about the new dominant ideologies that encourage diffuse individualism, self-centeredness and materialistic consumerism, as well as their contribution to the weakening of social bonds. This mentality of “discarding” leads to the contempt and abandonment of the weakest, generating a human coexistence based more on pragmatic and selfish exchange.
Consequences of conflicts and nationalisms in the current era
Pope Francis has emphasized that the consequences of the lack of fraternity are mainly manifested in armed conflicts and wars that not only divide people, but also entire nations. In addition, he has warned about the emergence of closed, exasperated and aggressive nationalisms, which have ignited conflicts that are presented as anachronistic and outdated, but which continue to be dangerously violent.
From an economic point of view, the Pope has pointed out how war is more attractive than peace in terms of economic gain, but always at the expense of the well-being of the population. Arms trading, in particular, is a practice that involves money stained with innocent blood.
The importance of negotiation in the prevention of wars
In an interview with the Italian channel TG1, Mons. Paul Richard Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, discussed various international issues from a perspective of the Holy See. He condemned an attack in Moscow as a terrible act that highlights the presence of destructive elements in global societies and warned of the danger of igniting global tensions.
Gallagher expressed concern about the lack of trust in international institutions such as the UN, the OSCE and the European Union, which were once central to addressing global conflicts.
In relation to the war in Ukraine, he stressed the importance of working towards peace through negotiation and agreement-building, stressing that defense involves weapons as much as building relationships and strengthening institutions .
Vision for a new world order based on justice and solidarity
Msgr. Gallagher raised the possibility of a new world order based on the values of justice, solidarity and cooperation between nations as a way to a more peaceful future. He also addressed the situation in the Holy Land, where he expressed support for the two-people, two-state solution as a viable option for achieving peace in the region.
It should be noted that Gallagher acknowledged the obstacles and difficulties present in the West Bank and the Gaza region, but stressed the importance of seeking political solutions to these conflicts through dialogue and cooperation between the parties involved.
