The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) announces changes for 2025

The General Traffic Directorate (DGT) has announced the modifications that will come into force in 2025 to the General Traffic Regulations (RGC). These modifications aim to guarantee road safety and avoid situations that could endanger other users of intercity roads in Spain.

Prohibition to advance in bad weather

One of the novelties is the ban on driving on interurban roads when the weather conditions are not favorable and there is little visibility. This modification will force all vehicles to drive in the right lane and follow the restrictions in the event of snow. The other lanes will be free for emergency vehicles and snow plows, with the aim of reducing the number of accidents in these situations.

Step for emergency services in traffic jams

Another measure is to open the lanes to the sides in case of delays on motorways and expressways, to allow the passage of police cars and emergency vehicles in the central lane. The purpose of this change is to speed up the work of emergency services and facilitate access to victims.

Motorcycle circulation and use of the curb

Motorcycles may ride on the right curb in the event of a hold-up, as long as they do not exceed 30 km/h and respect bicycles, which have priority. This change requires amendments to article 36 of the RGC.

Use of the curb by cranes and ambulances

Cranes and ambulances will also be able to use the curb to carry out emergency services, as long as they use light signals and reflectors.

These modifications aim to improve the flow of traffic on intercity roads and increase safety. The DGT is looking for solutions for situations that can cause problems on the roads. In addition, the new vehicles must have integrated advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS).
