Protection of Lomo Riquiánez

The Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands has made publicly available the file to declare Lomo Riquiánez, in Arucas (Gran Canaria), as a protected natural area.

The general director of Territorial Planning, Onán Cruz, highlighted that this process began in 2020 at the request of the City Council, and has gone through several citizen participation processes and before other administrations. After a detailed study of the file, it has been decided to grant it the protection figure of a site of scientific interest, based on the contributions of citizens and groups, since this figure is the one that best suits the objectives of protection, maintenance and restoration of the habitats of interest it houses.

Characteristics of the Protected Space

The space covers 306.6 hectares and will house natural formations and species endemic to thermophilic environments, linked to habitats of interest such as palm groves, wild olive groves and granadilla groves. Special attention will be paid to the protection of regenerating heathlands, present on the intermediate slopes and upper part of the space.

In addition, the recovery of some of its natural elements will be sought, as well as a possible intervention through active management measures. Permitted uses will be regulated, maintaining existing traditional uses and exploitations, and public use or environmental education objectives will be developed, as long as they do not go against the purpose of protection.
