A Unique Opportunity for Foreign Students
The Pompeu Fabra University offers a free online introductory Catalan course for students and teachers from abroad or from the rest of the State interested in learning the Catalan language from their place of origin. This MOOC, known as ‘Catalan for beginners’, was launched at the beginning of the 2022-2023 academic year and has seen a significant increase in the number of participants since then.
Open Access and UPF Tutoring
This course is open and accessible to anyone interested, offering an online learning platform that includes tutoring by Pompeu Fabra University. The main objective is to provide A1 level content through an interactive environment that encourages the creation of a community of students, teachers and facilitators interested in learning and spreading the Catalan language and culture.
Innovative Approach and Active Participation
The course uses a series of fiction to bring the Catalan language closer to non-Catalan speakers in a fun and relaxed way. The story stars the singer and actress Chloe Phillips, who plays an American girl named Ella who arrives in Barcelona to study at the UPF. This innovative approach has captivated the interest of the participants and contributed to the success of the course.
Growing Popularity and University Recognition
After the success of the first edition, the demand for the course has led Pompeu Fabra University to offer several additional editions. The course has already completed two editions during the 2023-2024 academic year, with the latest edition registering a record of over 500 participants, almost equaling the sum of students from all previous editions combined.
Recognition of Effort and Dedication
In addition to the opportunity to learn the Catalan language, Pompeu Fabra University also offers a university degree to accredit and recognize the efforts of participants from outside the Catalan language domain. This recognition is obtained by passing a minimum of 7 ECTS credits, highlighting the students’ dedication and success in the course.
