The works to bury the R2 in Montcada and Reixac begin this Monday
On January 29, a project awaited for more than 40 years begins. About 540 million euros will be allocated to bury the R2 train line in Montcada and Reixac.
A municipal office will report on the progress of the works
In order to keep the population informed, the mayor of the city, Bartolo Egea, has announced the creation of a municipal office that will communicate the progress of the work carried out. These tasks are expected to last between 6 and 7 years, after the award by the Ministry of Transport.
Prioritizing the safety and cohesion of the city
Mayor Egea has highlighted the importance of the works to improve safety, since the two level crossings where 180 people unfortunately lost their lives will be eradicated. In addition, this transformation will contribute to greater cohesion of the city, as the mayor has expressed: ‘We aspire to a new cohesive and safe city.’
Temporary changes during the first jobs
The first tasks will take place until February 9 in the Ribera neighborhood. During this period, there will be interruptions in traffic at the confluence of Conca and Llevant streets, in addition to the removal of some parking spaces. These changes are necessary to move forward with the project successfully.
The comprehensive transformation of the infrastructure
In addition to burying the R2 train line, the project includes other aspects. Among them, the building of a new station and a four-kilometer tunnel that will run 35 meters below the aquifer and the Ripoll river. The construction of a third railway for regional trains is also planned.
