Fernando Savater joins the Popular Party list
The philosopher Fernando Savater has been announced as the last member of the Popular Party’s list for the European elections on June 9, as announced by the party’s leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. This announcement was made through a publication on Feijóo’s account, where Savater’s authority and commitment to defending democratic values was highlighted.
Feijóo expressed the importance of unity both inside and outside of politics, in the streets and at the polls, in favor of equality and freedoms, when announcing the incorporation of Savater to the lists. Savater, recognized for his participation in constitutionalist political projects, has been received with enthusiasm by the popular candidate for the elections in Catalonia, Alejandro Fernández, who described it as great news, and by Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, who described it as formidable.
Political career of Fernando Savater
This is not the first electoral foray of the Basque philosopher and writer, who previously ran for the Senate in the 2015 general elections as a representative of Progress and Democracy (UPyD), a party he co-founded with Rosa Díez, Albert Boadella and Mario Vargas Llosa, among others. Later, he tried unsuccessfully to obtain a deputy seat under the same initials in Madrid.
In addition to his connection with UPyD, Savater was linked to Ciutadans, participating in the party’s presentation event in 2006 at the Tívoli theater in Barcelona. After the fall of the orange party in 2023, he joined with other ideologues to propose a new political project with the aim of recovering the practices, values and institutions of the Spanish Transition, called Third Spain, after the 23-J elections.
Now, Savater joins the Popular Party, a decision that has been celebrated by Feijóo. Likewise, the former secretary general of Ciudadanos and spokesperson for the orange formation in the European Parliament, Adrián Vázquez, also joins the popular ranks for the European elections, highlighting the importance of the PP as the only political alternative capable of rebuilding civic coexistence and constitutional, at a critical moment for democracy and the fundamental values of the European Union.
