A manifesto of support for the CUP

A group of approximately 150 personalities from the fields of culture, media and politics have signed a manifesto in support of the CUP ahead of the parliamentary elections to be held next Sunday, May 12. The text of the manifesto seeks a change of direction in current politics, expresses concern about the privatization of public resources and services, and calls to protect public health and education. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of promoting the energy transition and food sovereignty, and denounces the rise of fascism. The manifesto emphasizes the belief in the possibility of building a different and better country.

Outstanding personalities who support the CUP

Among the personalities who have signed the manifesto are prominent actors, singer-songwriters, comedians and musicians, such as Enric Auquer, Cesk Freixas, Ginestà (Júlia and Paz Serrasolsas), Maria Rovira (Oye Sherman), Ana Polo and Xavi Sarrià. There are also relevant figures from the cultural field, such as the vocalist of Txarango, Alguer Miquel, the composer Borja Penalba, the journalist Alba Riera, the director Marc Lesan, the comedian Marc Sarrats, the actress Natàlia Barrientos, the designer Queralt Guinart (Kerraturre) and the poet Martí Sales, among others.

Regarding the political sphere, the former Cupar deputies David Fernàndez, Anna Gabriel and Antonio Baños, as well as the lawyer Benet Salellas, stand out. Also joining the list are activists Gabriela Serra and Marcel Vivet, and former CUP deputy Julià de Jodar, who recently expressed his support for Carles Puigdemont’s candidacy in another manifesto, although he will ultimately opt for the CUP.

Support from other personalities for different candidates

In these elections to the Parliament, in which an uncertain scenario and possible blockages are expected according to the polls, the parties have especially sought the support of familiar faces to obtain votes and sympathies. For example, the socialist candidate Salvador Illa has the support of figures such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Isabel Coixet, Jorge Javier Vázquez, Josep Maria Pou, Núria Espert, Gervasio Defeer and Javier Mariscal, as well as the mayor of the Mossos, Josep Lluís Trapero . For its part, ERC has the support of Tomàs Molina and Andreu Mas-Colell. And in the case of Junts+ and the figure of Carles Puigdemont, Carles Porta, Lloll Bertran, Lluís Marco, Ada Perellada, Albert Sánchez Piñol, Pilarín Bayés, Joan Gaspart, Voltònyc, and former presidents Artur Mas and Jordi Pujol have shown their support.

Criticism and opposition to Salvador Illa

Some right-wing personalities have asked not to vote for Salvador Illa due to his alleged relationship with separatism and considering him insufficiently constitutionalist. Among the signatories of this manifesto are common names from the PP and Vox, such as the spokesperson in Congress for the popular parties Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, Rosa Díez, Alejo Vidal-Quadras and Albert Boadella. There are also people previously linked to the PSOE, such as Nicolás Redondo Terreros and Felipe González’s former minister José Luis Corcuera. Even the actor Antonio Resines joins the criticism.
