Inflation in Catalonia
The inflation situation in Catalonia is worrying. According to the most recent data from the National Institute of Statistics, the Consumer Price Index in the Principality stood at 3.3% in April, a figure higher than the national average. This upward trend is mainly explained by the increase in the price of gas and food.
The impact on the shopping basket
The shopping basket has experienced an increase in prices, especially in fruit, vegetable and vegetable preparations. This increase is related to factors such as drought and other problems in the agricultural sector. However, it should be noted that core inflation, which excludes energy and unprocessed food, has shown a downward trend, standing at 2.9% in April.
The most affected foods
Within the food basket, olive oil, fresh fruit and legume and vegetable preparations stand out as the products with the biggest price increases. Olive oil has experienced a year-on-year increase of more than 50%, while fresh fruit has become more expensive by 13.4%. On the other hand, other foods have maintained a certain stability in their prices.
Comparison with other European countries
The inflation situation in Catalonia and Spain differs from the trend observed in other European countries. While the average of the harmonized Consumer Price Index for the 27 countries of the European Union is 2.4%, in Catalonia and Spain this figure is higher, reaching 3.3%. This difference can be attributed to economic and social factors specific to each country.
