The refusal to apologize

In his characteristic style, the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, has refused to apologize for his recent statements about the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, and his wife, Begoña Gómez. In addition, he has adopted a victim stance, claiming that he has been attacked by the Spanish government and asserting that Sánchez is collaborating with Kirchnerism. These statements were made during an interview on the channel Todo Noticias (TN).

Reactions and diplomatic escalation

Milei’s statements during an event of the far-right party Vox, where he criticized Sánchez and accused his wife of corruption, caused a strong reaction in La Moncloa. In response, the Spanish ambassador in Buenos Aires, María Jesús Alonso, was summoned for consultations, and the Argentine ambassador in Madrid, Roberto Bosch, was summoned by the Spanish government. This triggered a series of cross-apology demands between the two governments.

To the theory of Mercy

Milei has tried to deflect blame and hinted at the possible existence of conspiracies in this diplomatic crisis. He has claimed that the events in Spain are related to the actions of Kirchnerism in Argentina and has suggested that Sánchez is using this crisis politically to divert attention from internal problems in Spain. However, despite the controversy generated, Milei maintains his intention to visit Spain next June to receive an award from a liberal organization.
