A Leader with Political and Family History
Toni Comín heads the Junts per Catalunya candidacy in the 2024 European elections, continuing his commitment to Catalan and European politics. At 53 years old, Comín comes from a family with a long political tradition, linked to Aragonese Carlism. His father, Alfons Comín, was a leading figure in the movement of democratic opposition to Francoism, evolving towards Christian socialism. This political heritage has marked the path of Toni Comín, who has stood out for his participation in European and Catalan politics.
European Trajectory and Independence Commitment
After graduating in Philosophy and Political Science from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Comín obtained a Robert Schuman scholarship to stay at the European Parliament in Luxembourg. For the last five years, he has been an MEP of the Non-Registered group, actively participating in the Commission for Development and Humanitarian Aid, as well as in the Special Commission on the Fight against Cancer. His work has focused on internationalizing the independence cause, demonstrating a firm commitment to the political evolution of Catalonia.
Political Beginnings and Ideological Evolution
Comín approached militancy through the anti-globalization movement, but his true political commitment was consolidated in 2003 when he joined Ciutadans pel Canvi (CpC). During his time as a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia, he actively participated in the preparation of the new Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia and promoted various legislative initiatives. His defense of sovereignty and progressive policies led him to approach ERC, demonstrating a significant ideological evolution throughout his political career.
Experience as Minister of Health and Exile
Appointed Health Minister by President Carles Puigdemont, Comín promoted the law for the universalization of healthcare and worked on reversing cuts and reducing waiting lists. However, his mandate was interrupted by his dismissal following the application of Article 155. In exile, he became Puigdemont’s right-hand man, leading the Lliures per Europa candidacy in the European elections. Despite legal challenges, his commitment to the independence cause remained firm, facing extradition attempts and obstacles to holding elected office.
