Streets of the old walled enclosure in Falset

Although they officially have different names, the inhabitants of Falset know them as first runner and second runner.
Streets surrounding the walled enclosures in Valls and Montblanc
In the towns of Valls and Montblanc, the streets that have been preserved as a result of the walled enclosures are called walls. These streets, which surround the old walls, are known for their function of being next to the wall. In Valls, we find the Sant Antoni wall, the Castell wall, the Sant Francesc wall and the Carme wall. In Montblanc, there are also streets that follow the layout of the wall, such as the Sant Jordi wall, the Sant Francesc wall and the Santa Tecla wall. Furthermore, in Montblanc the term wall is also used to refer to the streets that run inside the wall.
The term ‘raval’ in Reus and other towns
In the town of Reus, the term ‘raval’ is used to refer to the streets that surround the historic center. Each of these streets has a specific name, such as the raval de Jesús, the raval de Martí Folguera, the raval de Robuster, the raval de Sant Pere and the raval de Santa Anna. These streets form a circle around the historic center, and the inhabitants of Reus use the expression ‘tomb de ravals’ to refer to taking a walk and shopping in this area.
The use of the term ‘raval’ in other localities
The term ‘raval’ is also found in other localities. In Santa Coloma de Queralt, for example, there is a street called Raval de Cervera, which comes out of a gate in the wall towards Cervera. In addition, there are other streets that surround the wall at that point, such as Raval de Jesús, Raval de Santa Coloma and Raval dels Capellans. In Garcia, we find the raval de Jesús, the raval Mossèn Pere Tarrés, the raval de Santa Anna and the raval de Maria, which are the streets of the old town.
The meaning of the term ‘raval’
The term ‘raval’ refers to a neighborhood that is outside the walls of a town, as well as the road that leads to that neighborhood. In Reus, the term ‘raval’ is used generically to refer to the streets that surround the historic center. However, it is important to highlight that in Valls the term used for these streets is ‘wall’.
Incorrect use of the term ‘raval’
It is important to mention that the Great Dictionary of the Catalan Language of Enciclopèdia Catalana erroneously indicates that the term ‘raval’ is used in Valls to refer to a street. However, this is not correct, since in Valls the term ‘wall’ is used for these streets.
