The end of a royal marriage

Last January, Iñaki Urdangarin and Infanta Cristina made the decision to end their marriage. Although they did not make an official statement about it, the news was made public through the media. This outcome marked the end of a prolonged legal battle that culminated in an agreement that, according to the information provided by Juan Luis Galiacho, was more favorable for the former Duke of Palma. However, this agreement included certain conditions.

Economic agreements and restrictive clauses

According to Juan Luis Galiacho, director of ‘El Cierre Digital’, it was reported that Iñaki Urdangarin had received compensation of two million euros for a book project proposed to him by a well-known publishing house, which he ultimately rejected. In addition, he was guaranteed a monthly income of 25,000 euros for life, managed by Juan Carlos I, regardless of his presence. Despite this, Urdangarin warned that there would be consequences. This case was presented as an example to show that justice is equal for all, in an attempt to calm the social unrest of the time.

The financial agreement between Iñaki Urdangarin and Infanta Cristina was closed in Geneva, while in Barcelona only the divorce process was carried out. However, Cristina established certain clauses to make Urdangarin’s relationship with Ainhoa Armentia, her new partner, difficult. One of these clauses stipulated that if Urdangarin spoke to the media, he would lose all agreed benefits. He had already received a warning when he gave an interview to ‘Semana’ magazine.

Differences in the perception of the agreement

In an interview, Urdangarin stated that he was divorced and that he no longer had any convictions, confirming that he was no longer the husband of Infanta Cristina. However, journalist Maica Vasco denied this information, ensuring that the divorce signed in Barcelona was nothing more than a procedure. According to Vasco, the real economic agreement was signed in Geneva. This version suggests that the arrangement allowed Urdangarin to leave without officially receiving anything, a narrative that she considers implausible. Vasco argues that this procedure was a strategy to hide the fact that Juan Carlos I had provided a considerable sum of money to Urdangarin to guarantee his silence, thus avoiding questions about the origin of that money.

Divorce Agreement Details

According to the divorce agreement signed in Barcelona, Iñaki Urdangarin leaves “without compensation and without pension.” In addition, it is established that both he and Cristina will pay the children’s expenses until they are financially independent, based on their respective incomes. Maica Vasco questions the credibility of this agreement, considering that it does not match the lifestyle that Urdangarin leads. According to her, the most relevant part of the agreement was signed in Switzerland, which raises doubts about the veracity of the official version.
