Terrassa completes the asbestos census
Terrassa, a city located in the province of Barcelona, has completed the asbestos census in the municipality. This study, carried out by an external company using the latest remote sensing technologies, has detected that 30% of private constructions and 12% of public constructions contain asbestos. This represents a total of 7,600 buildings with the presence of this material.
Actions for the removal of asbestos
With the results of the census, the Terrassa authorities are preparing the necessary actions for the removal of asbestos. Priority will be given to spaces used to provide public services and to the most vulnerable groups. This action is mandatory to comply with the legislation of the European Union, which establishes the removal of asbestos before 2032.
National Plan for the Eradication of Asbestos
At state level, the Generalitat de Catalunya has designed the National Plan for the Eradication of Asbestos in Catalonia 2023-2032. This plan aims to manage and remove asbestos safely and efficiently. In addition, increased subsidies for the installation of solar panels on roofs as part of the asbestos removal process are being considered.
Collaboration with social agents and information services
Terrassa City Council is willing to work in collaboration with social agents to comply with the deadlines established by the EU. The possible regulation of exemptions or bonuses in fees or taxes related to licenses is also being considered. To facilitate information and resolve doubts, an information point will be opened at Carrer Pantà, 20, before the summer. In addition, a suggestion box will be made available to citizens through the citizen participation platform.
Management of asbestos waste
Terrassa City Council ensures that asbestos waste is properly managed. Therefore, procedures have been established for the safe disposal of the material. Small industrialists can take their asbestos waste to the Vallès Waste Treatment Center, while citizens can take up to 100 kilos of asbestos to the Can Barba rubbish dump, following the packaging conditions and the established schedule .
Transparency and security
Terrassa City Council is committed to transparency and safety in actions related to asbestos. It ensures that the demolition or dismantling projects of roofs and other elements that contain asbestos comply with the health and safety provisions established by law. In addition, the updated census and the planned calendar will be published on the municipal website, in compliance with the transparency law.
