Challenges in electric car sales

Electric car sales are hampered by three main problems. The first of them is related to the high prices at which these vehicles are marketed. The second challenge refers to the progressive degradation of the batteries that power them, while the third is linked to the insufficient network of chargers.

It is hoped that the first problem, the high cost, can be resolved soon thanks to the intervention of manufacturers such as Volkswagen or MG. Regarding the second challenge, numerous researchers are working to develop more efficient batteries. However, the third problem, related to the charger network, is presented as the most difficult to solve, as demonstrated by a recent survey that reveals that 79% of electric car owners charge at home.

Residential solutions

A study carried out by ChargeUp Europe highlights that private charging in individual or collective properties is the preferred option for electric car owners. In Europe, 79% of charging takes place in private spaces, followed by 15% of charging in the workplace. Furthermore, in 2023, 5.7 million charging points were installed in residential buildings, a figure that is estimated to increase to 27.5 million in 2030. However, a problem arises in multi-family residential buildings, whose electrical infrastructures are not prepared for a massive demand for electricity to charge car batteries.

Situation in Spain

In Spain, 90% of electric vehicle owners choose to charge them at their homes or workplaces, which places the country among the top three in the world in ratio of vehicle to charging point for private charging. Daniel Schwedhelm, Director in Spain of Sales to Companies of Monta, highlights the importance of recognizing the relevance of private charging in the current context, underlining that better understanding the dynamics between public and private charging will allow the creation of policies and strategies that meet the needs of electric vehicle drivers across Europe.

Privatization of recharging

The privatization of charging is proposed as a possible solution to the challenge related to the insufficient network of chargers, which highlights the importance of private or semi-public charging in the general panorama of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
