Madrid renounces the Carnival street parade
This year, Madrid will not have the traditional Carnival street parade. The City Council, headed by José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has decided to change the format of the event and give greater prominence to the traditional activities of the festival.
A participatory proposal in Matadero
Instead of the street parade, a participatory proposal has been organized that will take place at the Matadero site. The parade will feature the participation of artists and families who wish to join the celebration. This initiative seeks to encourage community participation in Carnival activities.
Contrast with the 2023 pre-election edition
The decision to change the street parade contrasts with the 2023 pre-election edition, in which a large parade was held with the artistic direction of the Yllana company. That parade toured the Mythological Madrid, the Austrias and the Movida, with the participation of numerous artists and folklore associations.
A very participatory proposal
The City Council highlights that this year’s proposal is very participatory, in collaboration with La Juan Gallery, an entity dedicated to living arts in Arganzuela. Workshops, puppet shows and musicals have been organized, and a large wig party with DJs has been included for young audiences. The goal is for families to be able to participate in both the workshops and the end-of-festival parade, alongside the artists.
A festival characterized by freedom and the popular conquest of public space
Although this year’s proposal will take place in a small place, the City Council highlights that Carnival is a festival characterized by freedom and the popular conquest of public space. The aim is to maintain the essence of the pre-pandemic carnivals and offer a participatory and fun experience for all Madrid residents.
