The first round of the French legislative elections

The first round of the French legislative elections will be held in nine days. Several French media have published this Friday the results of a survey, prepared by Ifop-Fiducial, which offers the first projections of seats in the National Assembly.

According to this poll, the National Regroupment of Marine Le Pen leads the voting intentions with 35%, followed by the left-wing Popular Front with 29%. Ensemble, the coalition of Emmanuel Macron, occupies the third position with 21.5%. The Républicains and Reconquête have support of 6.5% and 1.5% respectively.

Seat projections

The poll also shows a projection of seats favorable to the extreme right of Marine Le Pen. According to these projections, the National Regroupment and its allies could obtain between 200 and 240 seats. The Popular Front could get between 180 and 210 seats, while Ensemble! it could get 80 to 110 seats. The Republicans would have between 40 and 60 seats. The survey reserves around 8-12 seats for the left and 5 to 10 seats for other formations.

The absolute majority and the statements of Jordan Bardella

Although the National Regrouping leads the voting intentions, it is still far from the absolute majority, which requires 51% of the votes. Jordan Bardella, the leader of the party, has declared that he will only accept the position of prime minister if his party obtains an absolute majority in these legislative elections.

The electoral system and election dates

France’s electoral system is majoritarian, with one deputy elected by each constituency in the country. The second round of the elections will take place on July 7, where the two best-placed candidates in the first round will compete for the seat. However, if a candidate gets more than 50% of the votes in the first round, they will be elected automatically.
