The start of the countdown
This Wednesday the countdown for a potential repetition of the elections begins, with the signature of the president of the Parliament, Josep Rull, which will certify the impossibility of proposing a candidate for the investiture during the first 10 business days after the constitution of the chamber, as established by law. This action will begin a process similar to a failed investiture and will mark the beginning of the two-month period to present a candidate with the necessary support to be elected president of the Generalitat.
Limit date
If a president has not been elected by August 28, Catalonia will be forced to return to the polls on October 13. The plenary session will begin this Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with Josep Rull reading the resolution that formalizes this equivalent act and that begins the count around August 26. After the reading, the parliamentary groups will have the opportunity to speak for 5 minutes, in ascending order of representation.
Background and possibilities
In the past, the Parliament of Catalonia has experienced plenary sessions without investiture, such as in 2020, when Roger Torrent took this measure when verifying the lack of candidate proposals, triggering the call for elections. The Board has approved that the first half of August be a business day in case an investiture plenary session occurs during this period, which represents an exception to the usual suspension of parliamentary activity in that period.

The plenary session of the Parliament will take place this Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with the reading of the resolution by the president of the chamber, Josep Rull. After the reading, a turn will be opened for the parliamentary groups to express themselves on the matter, intervening in order from least to greatest representation. In addition, the possibility of calling an investiture plenary session during the month of August has been activated if a candidate with options to be invested arises.
