The temptation to drive in summer clothes
Summer brings with it days at the beach, swimming pools and, sometimes, the temptation to drive in light clothing such as swimsuits or even without a shirt. However, this practice carries doubts about its legality and safety that every driver should be aware of.
Recommendations from the DGT on clothing while driving
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) does not specifically mention what clothing should be worn while driving. But the General Traffic Regulations indicate that the driver must maintain freedom of movement, an adequate field of vision and the concentration necessary to drive safely.
Security risks
Driving in a bathing suit or without a shirt may seem comfortable on hot days, but it poses significant risks. For example, in the event of a sudden stop or accident, inappropriate clothing could increase the risk of burns from the seat belt or airbag. In addition, wearing sandals or driving barefoot can reduce control over the pedals, increasing the chance of accidents.
What the regulations say
Articles 17 and 18 of the General Traffic Regulations highlight the importance of drivers always maintaining control of the vehicle and paying attention on the road. Although these articles do not explicitly mention the use of a swimsuit or the absence of a shirt, they allow officers to sanction these practices if they consider that they endanger road safety.
Possible sanctions
Although there is no explicit prohibition on driving in a bathing suit or without a shirt, traffic officers can interpret whether these clothes affect driving safety. If they consider that the clothing limits the driver’s freedom of movement or safety, they can impose a fine of up to 200 euros and remove up to three points from the license.
Tips for driving in summer
To avoid penalties and guarantee safe driving, the DGT recommends wearing clothing that does not limit mobility or affect driving. Choosing clothing that protects the skin and allows adequate control of the vehicle is crucial. Likewise, the use of sandals should be avoided. Maintaining freedom of movement and attention on the road is essential for safe and responsible driving.
