A beginning marked by perseverance

Becky G’s career has been a real rollercoaster, full of intense work and moments of tension. Since her first steps in the world of music, this artist of Mexican descent has faced numerous challenges and made complicated decisions to stay at the top of her career. One of the most difficult moments relates to her worldwide hit ‘Mayores’, a song that created controversy and forced her to take steps to avoid major criticism.

The controversy with ‘Mayores’

Back in 2017, Becky G’s collaboration with Bad Bunny on ‘Mayores’ blew audiences away with its bold lyrics. With strong phrases like ‘me gustan más grandes, que no me quepan en la boca’ and ‘yo estoy activo 24/7, conmigo no hacen falta los juguetes’, some social entities felt offended. They went so far as to ask that the lyrics be changed so as not to upset the audience. The situation came to a head when, during her performance at Operación Triunfo, Becky G was asked to make small adjustments to the lyrics to reduce the explicit content.

The unknown version of ‘Mayores’

Few know that the version that became famous of ‘Mayores’ was not the original. In a recent interview with ‘Nude Project’, Becky G revealed the existence of an even more explicit version of the song. “I don’t know if I still have it, but there is a version of ‘Mayores’ with a very hard verse by Bad Bunny,” he commented with a laugh. ‘We had to change the lyrics a little,’ he explained.

The controversial verse

According to Becky G, the most controversial capital letter read ‘to your face’. Although the verse we know today is also iconic, the artist remembers that at the time Bad Bunny did not have the global fame he has today. ‘He was already very well known, but more so in the underground, he wasn’t that popular yet,’ explained Becky G. This anecdote demonstrates the fine line that artists must follow between their creative freedom and the public’s expectations. For her, self-censorship was a crucial tool to maintain the song’s impact without displeasing more conservative audiences.

The continuous struggle for success

The road to success for Becky G has not been easy. Although she rose to fame with ‘Shower’ in 2014, she lived through a period of uncertainty that made her question her future in music. ‘After ‘Shower’ I thought my career was over. Musical standards were very different at the time,’ confessed the artist.

Venturing into the world of acting

Looking for new opportunities, Becky G explored the world of acting, taking part in the Power Rangers movie. ‘I focused on being an actress, even though I hadn’t taken any acting classes. So if I’m trying something new in my career, like shooting a movie, maybe I need to try something different in my music,’ Becky G related.

A new musical stage in Spanish

‘It was time to face a great fear of mine: to sing music in Spanish professionally. Fortunately, it worked. It was a dream come true’, remembers Becky G. Her first song in this new stage was ‘Sola’, followed by ‘Todo cambió’. ‘It was very cool’, expressed the artist.
