A new measure by the DGT to improve road safety

In Spanish territory, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has introduced a section radar that is causing concern among drivers. Located in the province of Palencia, this radar covers a length of 33 kilometers, making it the longest stretch radar in Spain.

Function of a radar section

Speed cameras are speed monitoring devices that calculate the average speed of a vehicle over a given distance. Unlike fixed radars, which measure speed at a single point, section radars force drivers to maintain a constant speed and within established limits throughout the monitored route.

The most extensive section radar in Spain

This section radar is located on road CL-615, upstream, starting at kilometer 34.61. The DGT monitors a 32,895 meter stretch of this road continuously, resulting in the most extensive stretch radar in the country. Its installation has generated considerable anticipation and some concern among motorists, as maintaining a constant speed over such a wide distance is quite a challenge, especially in variable traffic conditions.

Drivers’ reaction to this radar

Many drivers see this speed limiter as a source of stress. They have to maintain constant attention not only to a specific point, but to control the average speed for more than 30 kilometers. On such long stretches, where traffic conditions can fluctuate significantly, this becomes an additional concern.

Justification of the DGT

The DGT has defended the installation of this section radar with the aim of reducing the rate of accidents on the roads. Statistically, section radars are effective in reducing the average speed of vehicles, thus achieving a decrease in the number of accidents. In addition, they offer more continuous and effective control of traffic compared to fixed radars.

Other relevant section radars in Spain

In addition to the radar in Palencia, there are other section radars in Spain that are notable for their length and strategic location. Some prominent examples are:

Section radar on the A-381 motorway, Cádiz

Located between Jerez de la Frontera and Los Barrios, this radar section covers 17.5 kilometers, positioning itself as one of the most extensive in southern Spain.

Section radar on the A-7 motorway, Málaga

In the province of Málaga, this section radar covers 15 kilometers on one of the roads with the highest volume of traffic on the Costa del Sol, especially during the summer season.

Section radar on the AP-7 highway, Valencia

Located on the AP-7 in Valencia, this section radar monitors a length of 12 kilometers. The DGT considers its presence essential to improve safety on this busy motorway.
