Recognition of a forgotten generation

In the Pyrenees of Pàndols, echoes of the past resonated on July 25 during the ceremony commemorating the Leva del Biberón. This tribute, carried out for 46 years, focuses on the young people recruited in 1938 and 1939, during the turbulent days of the Spanish Civil War, by order of the then president Manuel Azaña.

An act marked by absence

For the first time in the history of these commemorations, the celebration was held without the presence of a survivor. This year, figures such as Salvador Farrés were missing, who last year, at 102 years old, became a symbol of resistance and living memory. Instead, it was the descendants of those young soldiers who spoke.

Voices of the next generation

The event featured the children and great-grandchildren of those honoured, who shared their stories and their commitment to peace. One of the most moving interventions was that of one of Farrés’ daughters, who recalled her father’s sacrifice and advocated for a more peaceful future.

The legacy that endures

Despite the lack of survivors, local authorities and organizers reaffirmed their commitment to continue celebrating this tribute year after year. The mayor of Pinell de Brai, Laura Vallespí, highlighted the value of those who lived through that time and the importance of keeping their memory in the collective consciousness.

Promoting historical memory

Cinta Fornós, director of the Memorial Consortium of the Spaces of the Battle of the Ebro, stressed the need to involve young people in these reminders, pointing out that many are not present due to a lack of knowledge about their relevance. The delegate of the Government in Terres de l’Ebre, Adam Tomàs, also highlighted the crucial role of education in historical memory to counter the simplistic and dangerous narratives that arise today.
