We are in 2013, when Japanese gastronomy in Barcelona was starting to grow at an amazing rate. Although there were already Japanese restaurants in the city, such as Tokyo Sushi on Carrer Comtal or Yashima in Les Corts, the concept of a tavern or izakaya was not yet widespread. Until A Little Bit of Japan arrived.
A little bit of Japan: a unique experience
A little bit of Japan started as a small bar at Carrer Muntaner, 114, where the Hemingway cocktail bar is now located. I remember the first time I visited this place, it was hard to find as you had to go down some stairs to access it. It was there that I first tasted a bento, a box with compartments filled with delicious Japanese specialties.
A mother and son served customers quickly, offering bentos and other dishes of the day. Every bite I tried was like a new adventure, discovering unknown flavors and textures. The bento, with its various meals, transported me to the anime universe that had fascinated me so much during the 90s.
A new location, the same magic
It has been 10 years since then and dishes like yakisoba, sushi and oyakodon are now common in many cities. But A Little Bit of Japan has not lost its essence. The restaurant has moved to a new location, in a bright corner between Aragó and Comte Borrell streets.
The bento remains the star dish: fast, generous, balanced and economical. In one of my meals, I enjoyed a marinated eggplant, pickled turnip, stewed hijiki seaweed, tender bean, meatballs, breaded steak and a potato croquette. All this accompanied by a mountain of rice and a Japanese omelette to close the meal. And all this for only €12.50, drink not included.
A variety of dishes for all tastes
In addition to the bento, A Little Bit of Japan offers other delicious dishes such as grilled sardines with teriyaki, beef with sauce, vegetable tempura and katsu don. They are simple and perfect everyday dishes that will make you feel like you are visiting your aunt’s house in Yokohama.
