The new age of Catalan public transport
The Generalitat of Catalonia has launched an innovative initiative to facilitate travel through public transport with the creation of a unique ticket. This proposal, presented by the Secretary of Mobility, Manel Nadal, seeks to simplify the way citizens move throughout Catalonia.
Inspiration in state models
Nadal said that this measure is not new, as it is inspired by a previous proposal by the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, who suggested a similar system for the whole state. “We will develop our own title that reflects the needs of Catalonia and our metropolitan transport areas (ATM),” he said during his speech at the Territory Commission.
Collaboration with the state
The intention is for this new ticket to be compatible with the system that the State is designing by 2026, with the aim of achieving an interoperability that benefits users. Nadal added that it will be sought state funding for this initiative, thus maintaining the management of the rates in the hands of the Generalitat.
A new tariff model
From July 1, Rodalies users will enjoy a monthly flat rate of 20 euros, which will replace the current bonuses. This measure, promoted by the Spanish government, will be integrated into the new single ticket system.
Increased regional contribution
On the other hand, the Generalitat will increase its contribution to the ticket bonuses, from 20% to 30%, at a time when the state contribution will be reduced from 30% to 20%. Nadal emphasized that, although good news, the available resources are limited, and therefore a balance between bonuses and services will be sought.
Growing demand and its challenges
The increase in demand for public transport has been remarkable, with increases of 30% to 40% between 2023 and 2024. This trend, along with the fact that many young people choose not to obtain the driver’s license, is generating additional pressure about the system.
A sustainable approach
Nadal said that it is essential not to apply bonuses indiscriminately while an increase in services is requested. For this reason, it proposes a gradual reduction of bonuses, accompanied by alternatives that improve the accessibility and feasibility of public transport, especially with the culmination of the fare integration scheduled for 2025.
Looking to the future
As Catalonia moves towards a more integrated and efficient transport system, the creation of a single ticket represents a decisive step for sustainable mobility. With the planned improvements and proper management, it seeks not only to facilitate travel, but also to make public transport an attractive alternative for all citizens.
