The Comparison between Zarzuela and the Nordic Monarchies
The Royal House of Zarzuela has always observed with a certain envy the other Royal Houses that maintain their prestige as representative, institutional and popular, such as the Nordic monarchies. While in Zarzuela they coexist with a questioned emeritus, two divorced princesses, nephews with legal problems, a son-in-law with a criminal record and a queen involved in scandals, in countries like Sweden or Norway the kings are exemplary figures, without scandals of the magnitude and frequency of the Bourbons.
Prestige and International Recognition
One of the aspects that gives them greatest prestige is international recognition, such as the Nobel Prizes, which are awarded to the kings of Sweden and Norway every year in Oslo and Stockholm. In an attempt to emulate this award, in Spain the prince, now princess, of Asturias awards were created, which are awarded by a jury and presented by Princess Leonor in Oviedo every October. Unlike the Princess of Girona awards, which are awarded to anonymous people, the Oviedo awards distinguish established personalities.
Recognition of Joan Manuel Serrat
This year, the art prize was awarded to Joan Manuel Serrat, a recognition that comes late in his career. Despite criticism of the monarchy, Serrat accepts the award, although with a touch of cynicism when suggesting changing the name of the award.
Final thoughts
It is evident that the Royal Family first consults the winners before making the list of winners public. This raises the question of whether Lluís Llach, equally renowned and respected, would reject a similar distinction from the monarchy. Serrat, in suggesting that the problem lies in the name of the award, does not address the issue of supporting the monarchical institution by accepting the award. Despite his disagreements, Serrat accepts the award, which some consider a missed opportunity.
At 80 years old, Serrat is more concerned about environmentalism than political issues. Although his acceptance of her award may spark controversy, his legacy as a singer-songwriter remains indisputable.
