Macron calls for early legislative elections

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to advance the legislative elections to the National Assembly to June 9, in response to his party’s unfavorable results in the European elections. Despite having won the last two election campaigns, his popularity has declined since his re-election in 2022, creating uncertainty in the French electoral landscape.

The dominant coalition, known as Together, led by Macron’s Renaissance party, Democratic Movement and Horizons, currently does not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly, which has created an uncertain political scenario.

Polls and electoral outlook

According to the latest Ipsos poll for Le Parisien and Radio France, the National Rally (RN) and its allies lead the polls with 35.5% of voting intentions, followed by the left-wing coalition, the New Popular Front, with 29.5%, and the dominant coalition, Together, with 19.5%.

If the National Rally and its allies win 35.5% of the vote, they will have a large relative majority in the National Assembly, but will not achieve an absolute majority, which raises a scenario of uncertainty about France’s political future.

New Popular Front and proposals

The New Popular Front, made up of several French left-wing parties, has presented proposals such as raising the minimum wage to 1,600 euros, improvements in infrastructure and public services, and reducing retirement at age 60. His performance in the legislative elections will be decisive for the political future of the country.

Challenges for the ruling coalition

The ruling coalition, Together for the Republic, faces the possibility of losing its relative majority in the National Assembly, posing a challenge for President Macron, who seeks to repeat the platform that brought him to the presidency despite the backlash. negative generated by some of the measures introduced during his last mandate.

Electoral process in France

France will hold the first round of legislative elections on June 30, followed by the second round on July 7. In these elections, the French will vote for one deputy in each of the 577 constituencies, and those who obtain at least 12.5% of the votes will go to the second round if they do not reach an absolute majority.

In the event that no political bloc obtains an absolute majority, they will face a scenario of political blockade, since the president will not be able to dissolve the chamber of deputies until a year later, in June 2025.
