The UN includes Israel in the list of countries that violate children’s rights
The UN has notified Israel of its inclusion in the list of countries that violate the rights of children in armed conflicts, according to the spokesman of the General Secretariat, Stéphane Dujarric. This decision has been taken on the basis of the annual report prepared by the office of the Secretary-General, António Guterres, on the situation of children in war contexts. This report must be presented to the Security Council on June 14.
Israel’s reaction to the UN decision
Israel’s reaction to this UN decision has been outrage. Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has expressed his outrage on social media, saying that this decision will allow Hamas to use even more schools and hospitals to attack Israel, and that this will only prolong the war and suffering Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the Israel Defense Forces are the most moral army in the world and that no UN decision will change that.
List submission process
Before the official presentation of the list on 14 June, an advance copy will be given to members of the Security Council on that date. The report will be officially published on June 18 and will be discussed by members of the Security Council in an open debate scheduled for June 26. It is important to emphasize that the compilation of the list is an annual initiative of the members of the Security Council, who follow a common methodology.
Other countries and organizations on the list
In the previous list, countries such as Russia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Myanmar, Somalia, Yemen and Syria have appeared, as well as extremist organizations such as the Islamic State, Al-Qaida or Boko Haram.
