A Cooperative Initiative for Healthy Eating
La Igualitària is an initiative born from the association Cooperasec, together with the neighborhood of Poble-sec (Barcelona) who are committed to activating a self-managed and participative consumer cooperative that offers local, seasonal and agroecological products.
In this line, the driving agents defend healthy food at fair prices, both for the producer and the consumer, for this reason, they prioritize the relationship with the distributors in Catalonia.
The spokeswoman for the Cooperasec network, Gemma Rovira, explained in statements to premium.cat “we want to offer fresh essential products such as fruit, vegetables, yoghurts and cereals. We will also have personal and household hygiene products.”
A Space for Awareness and Meetings
On the other hand, the consumer cooperative wants to become a space for raising awareness where workshops and meetings can be held to deal with issues such as food waste or food sovereignty.
The Force of Cooperation and Solidarity
The project wants to demonstrate how a neighborhood initiative accompanied by popular power, cooperation and solidarity are key to making these projects a reality and transforming the system.
“We promote La Igualitària because we want to break the current capitalist dynamics to create fairer societies”, adds Rovira.
A History of Support for Working People
In this way, the name of La Igualitària has been chosen, which refers to a consumer cooperative that was born in Poble-sec in 1902. It became a symbol of cooperative popular self-organization in the neighborhood because it supported to the working people during the long strikes through food, basic products, medicine, etc.
A Call for Investment in the Territory and the Community
Currently, a funding campaign is being carried out so that the cooperative is viable and can open in April. So, the Cooperasec association and the neighborhood of Poble Sec are calling on all people who can invest in the territory and the community.
Equality: A Cooperation Space in Poble Sec
La Igualitària is part of La Base, Poble Sec Cooperative Ateneo, a space where different cooperative and self-managed projects come together with the aim of helping neighborhoods to become autonomous, as is the case of Poble Sec.
The project was born with the desire to recover the tradition of workers’ canteens, places where friendship, love or insurrection could grow in an atmosphere of fraternity, camaraderie and self-management.
