A slight increase compared to December
The year 2024 has begun with a stabilization of prices in Catalonia. During the first month of the year, the prices of consumer goods and services experienced a slight rise of 0.1 points compared to December 2023, according to data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI) published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) This moderate rise indicates a trend towards the normalization of prices in the region.
An annual increase of 3.3%
Compared to January of the previous year, prices in Catalonia have increased by 3.3%, while in the whole State the increase has been 3.4%. These data reflect a stability in the evolution of prices in the region, in line with the national trend
Factors that have influenced the evolution of prices
Electricity has been one of the elements that has contributed to the rise in inflation in Catalonia, while the cost of fuel has continued its downward trend in recent months. In addition, other sectors such as food and non-alcoholic beverages, hotels, cafes and restaurants, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, and leisure and culture have also experienced price increases. However, some areas such as clothing and footwear and leisure and culture have registered a drop in prices, thus keeping monthly inflation under control
Underlying inflation
Core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh food, is worth noting, and has experienced a decrease of 0.4 points compared to December. This indicator has been at lows since March 2022, indicating a certain stability in prices that are not influenced by volatile factors. However, compared to January last year, core inflation has increased by 3.6%
